How can we be in less pain? This is a really big question. Persistent pain is a huge problem affecting more than 1 in 5 people. The good news is there has been a revolution in how pain researchers understand pain.
The workshop will cover the latest science on back pain, joint pains and the emotions of suffering as well as effective strategies to reduce even the most difficult pain.
We now know pain is a protective feeling that is frequently out of sync with the state of the tissues and structures in the body. Persistent pain is a fault in the alarm systems of the body and brain; reflexes and feelings to protect from harm are kicking in too fast. As we become increasingly sensitised and fixed in our habits, pain is no longer an accurate indicator of tissue damage.
The model offered in this workshop is that if we can safely feed the brain essential sensations about the body we can break cycles of pain. This workshop will explore how to generate new feelings of safety via meditative awareness, how to reframe and meet difficult feelings and how to promote moving without fear. There will be paired exercises, lots of discussion and some simple movement recommendations. The goal is to enhance the connection between mind and body and generate feelings of connection and agency.
Topics covered will include:
-Understanding pain - 'Pain is an output’
-Meeting our individual stories around pain
-Understanding sensitisation in the nervous and immune systems
-Learning how to describe pain in ways that promote safety and turn down the alarm systems
-Pain in yoga practice - what is too much?
-Principles to change pain - education, graded exposure, precision in movement, being creative, keeping moving
The Pain Is Really Strange intro day is open to everyone. Please note it is not a TRE workshop.
